Ari is a Haas Scholar whose project focuses on the ancient fisheries of the San Francisco Bay Area using perspectives on materials previously excavated from the West Berkeley Shell Mound. She teases out how coarse-grained recovery methods, such as shovel broadcasting as well as column samples collected in 1951 provide an opportunity to reanalyze the site through fine-grained recovery methods. The column samples allow for analysis of the biases in the collection, which may select for large-bodied organisms while underrepresenting medium- and small-bodied animals, and how these biases affect our understanding of the economic, social, and technological processes of Native American lifeways.
